BALTIC YACHT 79'

26Jun2008

This yacht is a safe, comfortable high performance cruiser capable of taking its crew around the world in all kind of conditions. Based on previous experience the owner had a clear vision of what he wanted. She is designed to perform on long range sailing trips with the words Safety, Autonomy, Functionality, Performance and Comfort in mind. The design draws on the experience gained from the previous high performance oriented Baltic 78 and the comfortable Baltic 87 Deck House. The interiors have been designed in order to create comfortable spaces and to assure privacy between the crew quarters, pump room and navigation area, and also the owner/guests area. She was delivered 2004.

judel/vrolijk & co design comments

In order to be able to incorporate the owner's wishes into the project, a moderate medium to light displacement design was opted for. Together with Judel/Vrolijk extensive weight calculations and performance studies were carried out. The composite construction, with carbon/glass fibre for the hull and carbon fibre for the deck, resulted in significant weight being saved leading not only to a great advantage in performance and speed, but this also ensured a higher reliability and a longer lasting value of the yacht.

The Baltic 79 has a lifting keel with a torpedo, reducing the draft from 4.50 m to 2.80 m all in order to achieve good performance and access to shallow bays and marinas. The big water and fuel tank capacity means the yacht can sail or motor for long distances without the need for refueling.

The rig includes a new “canoe” type of boom. Compared with the “Park Avenue”, this boom stores the mainsail better and allows the crew to manage the sail more easily. The carbon four-spreader rig features swept-back spreaders and has no running backstays. The sailplan includes a non-overlapping genoa and a gennaker.

Distinctive features

Some of the most distinctive features of the yacht are the short coach roof that finishes just aft of the mast together with the big central cockpit for the guests. Also the anchor system is innovative, as the anchor operates with a flip-out movement inside the bow without folding arms and consequently with no encumbrances on the deck. The transom hatch can be opened hydraulically and it stores the almost 3 m long dinghy.

The interior layout was tailor made around the owner and his family's requirements with an owners and guest cabins forward and machinery, galley and crew aft. The saloon is wide and raised taking light from the 180° panoramic windows. The crew cabins, galley, crew mess and navigation area aft, has its own entrance enable easy handling of the boat without interfering with owner and guests. The engine room, has an oversized engine for good performance when motoring is amidships and is easily accessible for maintenance inspection.

Although being a yacht intended mostly for family cruising, with all the equipment needed for comfort, the high technology building methods used enabled a substantial of weight, hence the final displacement could be kept at a good light to medium displacement level resulting in high sailing performance and good characteristics.
