The Austral 360TT is the IRC race version of the new Austral 11 Clubman. Weighing in at 300 kg less and with 13 m^2 more sail area the design promises to be one of the fastest designs in Australia under 40 foot. However, unlike any other production boat, the TT takes performance a step further by effectively utilising a trim tab on the keel - hence the TT name.
The trim tab is about one thing and that is reducing the size of the keel and all the drag associated with it. This is done by cambering the foil like an airplane wing. The net result is a very small, thin strut a fraction of the size of a normal static keel. The required strength comes from the use of high yield cast steel, which is fitted, into a cassette allowing for better load distribution as well as ease of removal for trailing. This whole structure disappears inside the boat under the centre line galley, a proven seaworthy concept used by Jutson in a number of designs. Trim tab control is via Morse cable and is a simple single lever operation when tacking.
Stability wise the TT is well ahead of the pack offering a stability index in excess of 125 degrees making her one of the few designs in her size range that is Cat 1 legal.
Interior
The interior is designed for equal utility on either tack. The nav station, which is built around the engine box, has a secure seat on both port and starboard side. The galley is equally workable from both sides and, of course the berths, are also symmetric. The only item that is biased to one side is the head!
The TT rig is derived from Jutson's invaluable experience in the design of carbon swept spreader runnerless masts. These rigs are both light and robust and are quick to set up. That they are both performance and rating positive is a given as this style of rig grows in popularity.
Construction is hand laid high performance E glass/Vinylester laminates over foam core and follows the Austral history of high quality hand laid yachts. Design and construction is to American Bureau of Shipping standards.
